The Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition is holding a vigil for family members who have suffered forced separation owing to the federal Secure Communities program. Currently, an average of 19 people a week in Austin are sent to ICE custody as a result of the Travis County Sheriff Office’s participation in Secure Communities. Travis County has the opportunity to join Miami-Dade, Washington DC, Chicago, New York, San Francisco and a long list of other states, cities, and counties that are choosing not to honor ICE detainers.
