The Austin Lawyers Guild is hosting a 1-hour seminar on ICE Detainers in county jails under the Secure Communities federal deportation program. The Travis County jail has the 3rd highest rate of deportations in the country: 3970 people have been deported since 2009, 77% of whom were arrested for a misdemeanor. The seminar will provide an overview of the Secure Communities program and ICE detainers, how they work, and how they affect the immigrant community. The seminar is certified for 1 hour of CLE for attorneys, and 1 hour CE for social workers. The National Association of Social Workers requires us to collect $10 from every social workers who wants CE credit. Attorneys will be asked to donate $10 to cover costs. Students and interested community members are welcome.
